The Department of Basic English aims to provide the students whose level of English is below proficiency level with basic language skills so that they can pursue their undergraduate studies at our university without major difficulty. To achieve this aim, the department runs a two-semester intensive program placing emphasis on reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Students are placed in four groups according to their levels of English and have 20 or 30 class hours per week all through the academic year. To be a freshman, they are required not only to reach a certain level of yearly achievement but also to be successful in the English Proficiency Exam at the end of the year.

The Department of Basic English, with its lending library, various educational materials and tools, computer and multi-media facilities, silent study rooms and services on the Internet, offers its students several educational opportunities outside the class.

COURSES:

DBE 101 Beginner's Level
The initial 270-hour section of this 480-hour course is designed to equip students with the basic language and vocabulary required for them to practice academic skills. The remaining contact hours are dedicated to introducing students to reading, listening, writing and speaking for academic purposes.

DBE 102 Pre-Intermediate Level
This second semester 480-hour course, which is designed as the continuation of the 101 course, aims to bring the students to a level that will enable them to fulfill the requirements of their first-year courses. The focus is primarily on practicing academic skills. Further language and vocabulary reinforcement is provided through exposure to academic texts, both written and spoken.

DBE 201 Elementary Level
This 400-hour course is designed to provide students with 150 hours of initial language and vocabulary input. This initial stage is followed by practice in reading, listening, writing and speaking for academic purposes.

DBE 202 Intermediate Level
This 320-hour course is to follow-up to the 201 course. The aim is to provide students with further language practice through exposure to advanced-level spoken and written texts. The course is designed so that there is ample opportunity for the students to further practice in an integrated way the academic skills that they will need in order to fulfill the requirements of their first-year courses.

DBE 301 Intermediate Level
In this 320-hour course, the students are introduced to the academic skills that will be required of them during their first-year courses. These skills include reading for academic purposes, listening and note-taking, writing short texts based on information from their readings and listening input, as well as speaking. While practicing these skills, the students are also provided with the opportunity to expand their knowledge of language use and vocabulary.

DBE 302 Upper-Intermediate Level
This 320-hour course, which is the continuation of the 301 course, aims at bringing the students to the proficiency level required by the departments. The primary objective of this course is to enable students to purposefully use language through skills integration. Language and vocabulary are treated as a vehicle to extract meaning and facilitate task completion.

DBE 401 Upper-Intermediate Level
This 320-hour course is designed to cater for the needs of upper-intermediate level students whose proficiency level is only slightly below that required by the university. The aim of this course is to provide students with meaningful language practice through the use of tasks which require them to put into practice the academic skills that they will need to use during their freshman year.

DBE 402 Advanced
The advanced level is a 240-hour program designed for 401 students with an average of 75 or above in the first semester. This program is based on a portfolio system which promotes autonomous learning.

 

   Temel İngilizce Bölümü'nün amacı, İngilizce bilgisi yeterli düzeyde olmayan öğrencilere temel dil becerilerini kazandırarak üniversitemizdeki lisans eğitimlerini büyük güçlüklerle karşılaşmadan südürebilmelerini sağlamaktır. Bu amaçla okuma, yazma, dinleme, konuşma becerilerine yönelik iki dönem süren yoğun bir program yürütülmektedir.

Öğrenciler İngilizce düzeylerine göre dört kümeye ayrılmakta ve bütün akademik yıl boyunca haftada 20 ya da 30 saat ders görmektedirler. Birinci sınıfa devam edebilmek için gerek yıl içi programı başarıyla tamamlamak gerekse yıl sonundaki İngilizce Yeterlik Sınavı'nda başarılı olmak zorunludur.

Temel İngilizce Bölümü, kütüphanesi, türlü eğitim malzemeleri ve araçları, bilgisayar donanımı, görsel-işitsel gereçleri, sessiz çalışma odaları ve sanal ortamda sunduğu hizmetlerle öğrencilerine sınıf dışında da geniş eğitim olanakları sağlamaktadır.

DERSLER:

DBE 101 Başlangıç Düzeyi
480 saatlik bu dersin ilk 270 saati öğrencilere akademik becerileri geliştirici alıştırma yapmaları için gereken temel dil bilgilerini ve sözcükleri kazandırmak amacına yönelik olarak tasarlanmıştır. Kalan saatler ise akademik amaçlı okuma, dinleme , yazma, konuşma alıştırmalarına başlangıç niteliğindeki etkinliklere ayrılmıştır.

DBE 102 Orta Altı Düzey
101 dersinin devamı niteliğindeki bu 480 saatlik ikinci dönem dersinin amacı öğrencileri birinci sınftaki gereksinimleri karşılamalarını sağlayacak bir düzeye çıkarmaktır. Dersin odağı öncelikle akademik becerilerdir. Ayrıca, gerek yazılı gerek sözlü akademik metinlerden yola çıkılarak dil ve sözcük bilgisi güçlendirilmektedir.

DBE 201 Düşük Düzey
Bu 400 saatlik ders, ilk aşamada öğrencileri 150 saatlik bir dil ve sözcük bilgisi eğitiminden geçirmeyi öngörmektedir. Bu aşamanın ardından akademik amaçlı okuma, yazma, dinleme, konuşma alıştırmaları yapılmaktadır.

DBE 202 Orta Düzey
Bu 320 saatlik ders 201 dersinin devamı niteliğindedir. Dersin amacı, ileri düzey yazılı ve sözlü metinlerden yola çıkarak öğrencilerin türlü dil alıştırmaları yapmalarını sağlamaktır. Bu derste öğrencilere birinci yılda alacakları deslerde gerek duyacakları akademik becerileri kazandırmak üzere bütünleşik biçimde düzenlenmiş geniş alıştırma olanakları sunulmaktadır.

DBE 301 Orta Düzey
Bu 320 saatlik derste öğrenciler birinci sınıf dersleri için gereken akademik becerileri kazanmaya çalışırlar. Bu beceriler içinde akademik amaçlı okuma, dinleme ve not tutma, okuma ve dinlemeyle edinilen bilgileri kullanarak küçük metinler yazma ve konuşma sayılabilir. Öğrenciler bir yandan bu becerilerle ilgili alıştırmalar yaparken, bir yandan da dil ve sözcük bilgilerini geliştirecek olanaklarla donatılmaktadır.

DBE 302 Orta Üstü Düzey
301 dersinin devamı olan bu 320 saatlik dersin amacı öğrencileri bölümleri tarafından istenen yeterlik düzeyine çıkarmaktır. Bu dersin öncelikli hedefi öğrencilerin, türlü becerileri birarada değerlendirerek, dili kendi amaçlarına uygun biçimde kullanabilmelerini sağlamaktır. Dil ve sözcük bilgisi, anlam çıkarmak ve istenenleri yerine getirmek için bir araç işlevi görmektedir.

DBE 401 Orta Üstü Düzey
